Tomatoes are classified as either determinate or indeterminate:
Determinate Tomatoes:
Determinate tomatoes, usually called “bush tomatoes,” are plants measuring 50 cm to 1.5 m (more compact and bushy than indeterminate tomato varieties). With determinate tomatoes, all the fruit ripen at the same time over a period of a few weeks. After this initial fruit flush, the plants produce little or no new fruit.
When growing determinate tomatoes on a Tower Garden, we advise selecting dwarf varieties.
Example of a determinate tomato variety known as Orange Hat tomatoes, which is a dwarf tomato variety that reaches 6-9 inches in height.

Indeterminate Tomatoes:
Indeterminate tomatoes, also known as “vining tomatoes,” continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the growing season. They produce vines measuring between 1.5 m and 4.5 m and get new fruits over a more extended period than their determinate counterparts.
Because of their vining/sprawling growth patterns, indeterminate tomatoes require strong support, such as tall stakes, trellises, or cages, when grown in a Tower Garden.
If you are using a Tower Garden for domestic use, whether a Tower Garden Flex or a Tower Garden Home, please consider that plants will grow for 4 to 6 months when cultivating indeterminate tomato varieties. During such a timeframe, you cannot clean your tower.
Growing tomatoes in a Tower Garden is an enriching experience, but considering the ongoing pruning and maintenance required, it involves more labor than other crops.
