In our vertical farm, we cannot use soil as a substrate since we grow in aeroponic towers. Instead, we use agricultural rock wool, a soilless substrate made from basaltic rock derived from the lava of volcanoes. Rock wool is lightweight, chemically inert, and pH-stable, making it an excellent choice for soilless farming. Its superior water retention and ideal air-to-water ratio provide roots with access to both moisture and oxygen, promoting optimal plant growth. Rock wool typically has an alkaline pH of around 7–8 before soaking, but soaking it in water lowers it to a pH of 5.5–6.0, which is ideal for nutrient uptake and healthy seed germination.

Lemon balm (Melissa) is a fragrant herb belonging to the mint family and is known for its calming effects. It can be grown in many different growing conditions and even flourishes in humid conditions. It is also a natural pest repellant, deterring pests like mosquitoes and gnats. For the best flavor and aroma, harvest leaves just before flowering, when the essential oils are at their peak.
